ASSIGNMENT AND HOMEWORK ARCHIVES
----Foundation Art I
This is a good way to review, revisit, or jog your memory from a class assignment. If you missed class do not use this as your only resource. Contact me here, because there will be a few things I am sure I want to impress upon you that doesn't always come through in the pdfs. Also, please do not rely on your fellow students. No matter how well intentioned they are, or how well they do in my class they typically cannot get you all the details that I would like you to have.
Fourth Quarter! Lets end strong!

Due Date-
Welcome to the 2nd Semester!!
Foundation I

Art With a Message-UPDATED 25/2/2015
Welcome back! I hope you all thought about your Art with a Message project during Winter Break and came back fully prepared as I had asked.
There will be 4 full period to work on this project so I hope that gives you a sense of importance as you decided so much on how to approach it.
UPDATE--This project is due at the end of the period on Friday March 6th at the end of the period.
Not March 2nd as originally planed.
Due to the fact I won't be here on Friday's class because of the AP Art Field Trip, in addition to the fact I have witnessed enough students really working to come up with engaging ideas.
I appreciate those that have been able to work on thumbnails sketches and work with me to flesh out the most powerful visuals they can.

17/11/2014--Portraits
This is a new assignment for me, but I have looked at it for a bit now. You will be given a random portrait, of someone who is looking directly at the camera. This print out will be cut right down the middle, with one half being taped on A3 paper. (don't tape in the edge where the face is) Now you will draw the missing half of the portrait, using value. You may use the other half as reference, and create a background as well. Don't leave a blank background.
03/11/2014--working from a ground
Drawing off a ground! Its a way to help you look at the big shapes and capture them. Since you will be working off a middle grey to make things lighter you need to erase to get the lighter tones. You will add to make the darker tones, so there this is both additive and subtractive by nature.
Its very important to look at the big shapes! Remember to squint. I know it feels funny but it helps you see the big shapes by fuzzing out the details.

13/10/2014--Free Draw!!!
Between the Still Life Drawings we will be doing a FreeDraw for the 50 minute classes. It is observational and drawn from around the flagpole area. Value or line, or a combination of them both! Your call.
06/10/2014--Line VS Value Still LIfe
Compare and contrast is often used in a more academic setting, but it is perfectly, wonderfully valid in the visual arts as well. Instead of having work of others to compare and contrast we will be doing that with your own work! But, there is so much more
Part of what is a big hinderance for new artists is the idea of that every line, and every mark is precious and they spend too much time pondering each one for so long that they become frozen and don't make hardly a mark at all! To help change that we are going to take the 70 minute period of the week to create two drawings, one of line, one of value. You will have 25 minutes to fill up your page and make it an interesting, engaging drawing that captures the still life in front of you.
The following week we will revisit the still life, with some slight changes. After a crit on next period we we have together should help you to improve upon your work, as we look at the strengths and weakness in our composition and mark making.
Please remember with line, darker heavier lines come forward, as lighter thinner lines tend to recede or go back in space. The opposite is true for value. Darker values tend to recede in space, (think about a hole, they usually are dark and farther away from you) and lighter values come forward in space.
Isolate the areas of interest to you. Don't feel it necessary to show the entire still life. Matter of fact I highly discourage it. Please do not forget the background, as its as important as everything else. Don't make it an afterthought. No plain backgrounds, you know I don't like that as it shows a lack of seeing the big picture. It can be simplified and even fuzzy, but don't forget the background!

15/09/2014--O'Keffe or Lichtenstein
Your problem that you are to solve visually is to find the essence of either Georgia O'Keeffe or Roy Lichtenstein who we looked at in class today. We also discussed a number of formal differences between the two in both subject matter as well as how they draw and paint them.
Use that essence of the artist you choose to make a work on A3 paper that is the embodiment of that artist. If you need a reminder of the look and what each artist did, or of the project itself follow this link and down load the Keynote presentation we had today.
If you have any questions please email me, and don't assume.

03/09/2014--Visual Elements of Art and Principles of Design
The core of this project is to capture a total of 3 of the Elements of Art and/or Principles of Design in a visual way, while also incorporating the word itself. Make sure you consider the background and how that can help you with the best solution. If you do more than 3 you can get some extra credit.
Pen, marker, pencil only.
